I have always been one to think I am humble and that I appreciate everything I have. however, sometimes I don’t think about the small stuff that I have that not everyone in the world has. For instance, running water. There are people around the world who have to travel miles just to get their drinking water.
I spent 10 days in Haiti, and that really changed my perspective on things. They have so many problems down there. The biggest one in my mind was sanitation. They don’t have any sanitation services so there is trash lying everywhere. People burn their trash when it becomes too much so it always smells like burning trash.
In Haiti I went on a service trip to help build classrooms for orphaned children. They had a small area enclosed with a high fence that had dirt on the ground. The children had many kids in one room. It made me sad but, they weren’t sad. That was the most profound thing, in my mind. The kids were so happy to see us every day. It warmed my heart.
My point is that no matter what the circumstances we find ourselves in, we always have the choice to be happy. We always have the choice to modify our reactions to things, to change our perspective and look at life in a new way. It helps me to remember that right now, someone else has it worse than me.
That isn’t meant to deny your suffering, only to put it in a realistic view. I think this way of looking at things makes you humble as well. Remember that God is always with you. And will always be there for you. Thanks!
